As one of the UK's oldest cities, Durham is steeped in heritage and culture. Statistics tell us that cancer mortality rates in County Durham are lower than the national average of England, but they are rising. Durham has also seen an increase in cancer support services that are available in the city and surrounding areas.

Our latest City Spotlight takes a look at just a few of those incredible support services that are on offer.

FACT - Fighting All Cancers Together - Durham Hub

FACT is a charity that brings together different support services, groups, organisations and charities under one umbrella. They provide regular support groups and activities for people living with cancer, plus help, advice and support for their families and friends. During to current restrictions due to COVID-19, FACT are unable to offer their usual meetings and physical support, but are offering help via their website and by telephone.

 

Macmillan Cancer Support Information Centre at University Hospital of North Durham

Located at the University Hospital of North Durham in the town centre, the Macmillan Information and Support Centre offers free and confidential information and support in a relaxed and friendly environment. They offer help and support to anyone affected by cancer, from advice on prevention to practical support for those living with it or the effects on others. From a simple chat to advice about benefits or long term care with courses and workshops, they are here to help.

 

Great Aycliffe Cancer Support Group

This is a friendly social and support group for anyone who has been affected by cancer that meets regularly at the Youth Centre in Newton Aycliffe. They offer information on issues affecting cancer patients, confidential emotional support in a safe and friendly environment, regular social activities and more including patient transport if needed. During COVID-19, their Facebook page has been extra-active with fundraising activites to help those who need it most.

Macmillan Joining the Dots - Support Service

This is a free service for people aged 18 and over affected by cancer. Their team of 'Joining the Dots Facilitators' provide personal support and a single point of contact for advice and information for adults living with cancer including physical, emotional and spiritual support, help and advice about family and relationships, both practical and financial. Advice is currently offered by telephone, email and text message to those that need it during the pandemic.

 

Nicola Jane - Post Surgery Bra Fitting Service - North East

A specialised service for women who have had a mastectomy, lumpectomy or reconstruction surgery. The team offer a bra-fitting service with expert fitting and style advice at Nicola Jane Fitting Clinics and Hospital Support Groups with a team of fitters on hand at a number of locations every month as well. Fitting clinics are by appointment only so visit their website for more information. All products are available online and come with a 365 day returns policy.

 

Durham and District Women's Cancer Support Group

This is a support group offering advice, emotional support and practical help to women and their families and friends dealing with cancer including breast cancer cervical cancer, fallopian tube cancer, ovarian cancer and womb (endometrial) cancer. They meet once a month on the evening of the second Monday at University Hospital of North Durham, North Road, Durham and they work closely with Macmillian. The month of November sees a particular awareness of male cancers and mental health in males and is a great way to get men talking. We spoke to Advanced Nurse Practitioner, Sandra Dyer, from Transforming Cancer Services Team for London about opportunities for primary care nurses to promote cancer awareness and support men living with cancer.
