Cancer Support Services in Coventry | City Spotlight

The city of Coventry is known for its medieval cathedral, which stands roofless next to its 20th century counterpart because of a bombing in World War II. One thing that can’t be torn down however is the fantastic network of cancer support that serves the city.

Our latest City Spotlight takes a look at just a few organisations offering cancer care support in Coventry.

Macmillan Cancer Support Information Centre – Coventry

Part of the UK wide Macmillian cancer charity, this support centre offers free and confidential information and support in a relaxed and comfortable environment. Services at the centre include counselling, benefits advice, self-help and practical support, courses and workshops for all those affected by cancer including family and friends. Some services are disrupted due to Covid, please check the website.

Shine a Light, Support Services

A local charity that supports families of children affected by cancer in the Coventry and Warwickshire area. Services include home visits, supporting families at hospitals, counselling sessions for both children and adults, social events and day trips for families, drop in sessions, holistic therapies, events for teenagers, tuition sessions and more. They work with families with a child or young person between the ages of 0 and 24 years from the date of diagnosis for as long as each family needs. Many services are being carried out over the phone at the moment, so ask the team for more details. 

The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation – Coventry Support Group

A nationwide charity run local support group offering help and advice for people living with lung cancer. They offer practical information following a diagnosis about the illness and all kinds of treatment, they also offer the chance to talk to others affected by lung cancer, bereavement support and advice, a will-writing service, information days, and support to quit smoking. There are regular meetings and a helpline on 0800 358 7200 if you have any questions about lung cancer. 

Brain Tumour Support – Warwickshire Coventry Group

National support service for anyone affected by a brain tumour. During Covid crisis all reginal meetings have been suspended, but they are offering a wide range of virtul and online support group meetings and chats. Full details are on the website and subjects include practical advice on different treatments and what financial support is available plus emotional help for patients, family and friends.  

Myton Hospice – Coventry

A Coventry hospice that provides end of life care to those with life-limiting illnesses and help and support for those also affected. Their services include care at home, an inpatient unit, day hospice, counselling, special children and teen services, complementary therapies, spiritual care, hairdressing and more. They also provide a variety of services for carers and families; visit the website.for a full list of services offered.

Arden Cancer Research Centre

The Oncology service provides assessment, treatment, follow-up and supportive care for patients with cancer and a number of non-malignant conditions. The service is based at the Cancer Centre in Coventry and they offer patients, relatives and carers support and advice over the telephone if there are concerns when the patient is at home they also have close links with the Palliative Care Team who can offer specialist advice with the more complex situations.
