In today’s blog, we chat to Angor, a charity dedicated to helping anyone living with cancer or a life-limiting condition, based in Carmarthenshire Wales.

Tell us about your organisation…

We offer a safe, empowering space for individuals, their families and carers designed to help people cope with all aspects of a life-altering diagnosis, through treatment and beyond. Our approach is rooted in the belief that support should be personal, accessible, and community focused. The concept started as a community-based project when like-minded individuals realised the void that exists following a diagnosis of cancer or a life limiting illness, with people mentioning a need for ongoing support and advice. The charity gained registration in May 2022. The board consists of professionals from the NHS, Social Services, Pastoral, Business and Legal backgrounds, and patient advocates. Our main base is The Cabin, Parc House, Kidwelly SA17 5AB.

We also offer pop ups and drop-ins through Carmarthenshire. The Cabin is accessible, with free onsite parking and stoma-friendly washroom facilities. The team speak Welsh and English and our website www.angor.org.uk and information leaflets are bilingual.

What services do you offer to people affected by cancer?

Angor provides a range of free emotional and practical support services designed to build hope and strength which include:

  • Emotional Support: A safe space to talk, listen, and connect with others who truly understand.
  • Tailored Wellbeing Activities: Tai Chi, Yoga, Art & Craft Sessions, Music Wellness Sessions, Relaxation Sessions, Mindfulness to help manage anxiety and improve mental wellbeing. Haircare and Beauty advice following /during treatment.
  • Holistic Approach: Focusing on the needs of the whole person—mind, body, spirit, and emotions.
  • Family & Carer Support: Recognizing that a diagnosis affects loved ones too, Angor extends its services to carers, loved ones and family members.
  • Networking with third sector organisations, National and Local Charities with Pop Ups through the county of Carmarthenshire. Working with and facilitating NHS nurse led support groups including Bowel and Breast support groups and neurological support groups.

Who are your services aimed at supporting?

The service is open to anyone, their loved ones, families and carers following a diagnosis of cancer or a life limiting illness.

What’s the most rewarding thing about the work you do?

Angor aims to support people to navigate the diagnosis and help them move forward in life. It is rewarding to hear the difference the charity has made to many people.

What would you say to those who are considering getting in touch with you but are nervous or apprehensive?

For anyone considering making contact, Angor would like to reassure you that you will be welcomed, your concerns will be heard and not judged, and we will endeavour to help and support you and your loved ones.

Can you tell us about your team?

We have 30 volunteers from all walks of life, many with lived experiences. We have a team of 3 people, each with their own experiences and backgrounds, including nursing, education and third sector work who support our service as well as volunteer for Angor.

What are the values of your organisation and can you describe your organisation in 3 words?

Angor values are best described as compassionate, bespoke, welcoming, non-judgemental and inclusive. We often describe our service mission as “Bridging The Gap” referring to the void that is often experienced by people and their loved ones following a diagnosis of cancer or a life limiting illness.

And finally, how are you funded and what can people do to support you if they would like to?

Angor receives funding from private donations, sponsorship, fundraising events, donations from organisations and grants. If you would like to volunteer please contact us at support@angor.org.uk.

For anyone who would like to donate or Fund raise, we would like to say Thank You, our Just Giving can be accessed via the QR Code:
