Cancer Support Services in Newcastle | Spotlight

There are over 6,000 local and national support services listed across the UK on Cancer Care Map. Today we’re spotlighting some of the cancer support services available in and around Newcastle.

Gateshead Carers – Charity providing free tailored support and guidance to unpaid carers. Once registered, carers will work with an assigned wellbeing facilitator to support them with their wellbeing goals. There is also a cancer cafe for carers to come together and socialise. Carers can also apply for a grant of up to £200 to help towards their health needs. 

Maggie’s Newcastle Managing Stress and Uncertainty Course – The course encourages you to try out different ways of relaxation, including managing anxious thoughts, meditation, visualisation, and how to use these methods in everyday life. Maggie’s has a lot of other courses to support you in different ways, from creative writing to acupuncture. 

Bright Red – Charity for people living with blood cancer in the north of England. It gives grants to individuals and organisations to carry out research into blood cancers, including investment in improving patient care and contributing towards staff development. It also offers support groups and complementary therapy for people with blood cancer and their loved ones and carers.

Gateshead Older People’s Assembly (GOPA) – Charity for people aged 50 and over in Gateshead. It offers services to improve mental and physical health and independence including opportunities to socialise, exercise and learn.

Daft as a Brush – Free transport service taking people to and from the Freeman/RVI hospitals for cancer outpatient appointments. If required, a member of the Daft as a Brush team can also stay with you whilst you have chemotherapy or radiotherapy treatment and then bring you back home.

Scotswood Garden – Charity managing a natural community garden where people of all ages and backgrounds are invited to maintain the garden and use the green space to support wellbeing. Education, youth and forest school programmes can be carried out either in school or at the garden. Volunteers have opportunities for free accredited training where possible, in gardening and vocational skills.
