Cancer Support Services in Harrogate | Spotlight

There are over 6,000 local and national support services listed across the UK on Cancer Care Map. Today we’re spotlighting some of the cancer support services available in and around Harrogate.

 

 

The Dodgy Walnut – Support group for younger men and their partners who are living with, or affected by, prostate cancer. Although there is no age limit, this group is tailored to those who are either employed or who haven’t yet reached state retirement age. This is a space to share experiences and talk about issues such as family, finance and relationships.

Boroughbridge Community Charity – Charity offering support to residents and communities with signposting, shopping, transportation, digital support, community larder, and Citizen’s advice. Services also include wheelchair hire, befriending, Thursday lunch clubs, and Friday coffee mornings.

Harrogate Town AFC Community Foundation – Charity that promotes inclusivity, wellness, and community spirit through playing football. Activities include a men’s mental health group, a social group for over 50s, women’s football, walking football, children’s football clubs, programmes for children with additional needs, and holiday camps.

Dancing for Wellbeing – Community organisation providing dance classes for older people, including people with health and mobility problems, as all sessions can be done either standing or seated. There is also a class for carers of people with dementia. At the end of each class, there is time for refreshments and socialising.

Harrogate Easier Living Project – Charity offering practical assistance in the home and garden, as well social interaction, exercise and befriending services, with the aim of helping people to live safely and well in their communities. Practical help includes painting, garden work, DIY and small repair jobs, to aid independent living, which do incur a fee. See website and/or contact for more information.

Carers Resource – Charity offering a wide range of information, advice and support for adult and young carers. This includes help with money and benefits, help to access emotional support, counselling and time off from caring, as well as social groups and events, and more.

Vision Support Harrogate District – Charity that offers support and advice to visually impaired people, their loved ones and carers. The Harrogate drop-in centre offers regular activities, including IT training, knitting, bridge, quizzes, line dancing, keep fit and indoor bowls. There is also a helpline, home visits, and outreach projects which organise social activities such as walks, day trips and evenings out.

Harrogate Lung Cancer Support Group – Support group for people affected by lung cancer including loved ones and carers. Meet others with shared experiences and get support and information. Meetings held on the second Wednesday of every month.

Harrogate End of Life Planning and Support Service (HELPSS) – Service supporting people living with a palliative diagnosis who may be approaching the last year of life. It aims to support patients to get the type of care that they want, at the time it is needed and in the place that is preferred. This includes the chance to create an Advance Care Plan and be referred to the Goldline for 24/7 phone advice and support. Self referrals are accepted, or referrals via a health care professional.

Fit4Future Cancer Exercise Sessions – Group exercise class for people living with or beyond cancer. Held usually on Tuesdays in person. You must be referred by a health care professional to access this. Other health and wellbeing classes are also available.
