5 minutes with… Preloved Reloved – Cancer & Beyond

In today’s blog, we chat to Jo about her charity Preloved Reloved, that provides donated items like wigs, turbans, PICC covers and post surgical bras free of charge to people affected by cancer.

Tell us about your organisation

Preloved Reloved – Cancer & Beyond is a charity based in Kent, and I’m proud to say we were granted charitable status in May 2024, though the heart of what we do goes back further than that. I have my own personal connection to the cancer community, and it was through that experience, attending events, meeting people, and seeing first-hand the community and sense of belonging that forms around cancer support, that I felt compelled to take action myself. I wanted to do something to help, and have seen first hand “cancer poverty”, the very real financial strain that comes on top of a cancer diagnosis. Items such as wigs, a turban, post surgical bras, compressions garments, mastectomy pillow, drain bags, PICC covers – to name a few – all essential items but for some, unaffordable extras. I wanted to make sure nobody in our community had to face that on top of everything else they were already carrying. That’s how Preloved Reloved started, with a simple mission, to make sure no one faces cancer alone.

What services do you offer people living with or affected by cancer?

We provide donated items completely free of charge to anyone affected by cancer. That includes:

  • Wigs
  • Turbans and headscarves
  • Mastectomy pillows
  • PICC line covers
  • Scalp cooling support packs
  • Mastectomy and post surgery bras
  • Compression garments
  • Breast prosthetics
  • Adaptive clothing
  • Any items that can be recycled and passed onto someone else in need

Everything we give away is donated, and everything we give away is free. We also run a monthly Walkie Talky group, a chance for anyone affected by cancer to get outside, walk, talk, and connect with others who understand exactly what they’re going through.

Who are your services aimed at supporting?

Our services are for anyone going through a cancer diagnosis. We don’t limit support by age, gender, or type of cancer, if you’re affected, you’re welcome.

How do you cater for people with specific needs?

We’re able to send items anywhere in the UK, so no matter where you’re based, you won’t be turned away. If you’re local to us in Dover, you’re welcome to visit our unit in person, or, where needed, we can arrange a home visit instead, so mobility issues or difficulty travelling are never a barrier to getting the support you need.

What’s the most rewarding thing about the work you do?

Honestly, it’s the messages I receive from someone who has received a package from us – could be something as simple as some turbans or a mastectomy pillow – knowing that’s one less thing they have to worry about, and one less cost they have to find, at a time when they have more than enough to think about. It’s also the sense of community that’s built up around the charity – the same feeling I found when I first got involved in this world myself, and now get to help create for others.

What would you say to those who are considering getting in touch with you but are nervous or apprehensive?

Please don’t be nervous, we’re here for exactly this reason. There’s no judgement, no assessment, and nothing to prove. You don’t need to explain your situation in detail or justify why you need something. If cancer has touched your life in any way, you’re welcome to reach out, and we’ll do everything we can to help. Getting in touch is simply the first step towards one less worry.

Do you have testimonials from people that have used your services?

“I received a package from Jo at Preloved Reloved. It contained a heart shaped cushion and a scalp

cooling support pack. The cushion was game changing for me after surgery and allowed my to lay on my

side which I was desperate to do! It’s the type of useful thing only someone who had been through breast

cancer treatment would know. The scalp cooling pack has so many useful things in for my upcoming

chemo treatments. Jo included a hand written message and a keyring saying you are not alone. She has

taken such care with everything right down to the eco packaging. I was moved to tears when I received

the package. Thank you so much Jo for everything you do. It really is appreciated.” – Mary, Norfolk

“Jo is so lovely. I reached out to her following chemo, when I needed wig. It was really important to me that

going back to work I looked as ‘normal’ as possible. I had spent a lot of money on a wig and I realised that

wearing them all day everyday, that one wasn’t going to be enough and wasn’t going to last the wear and

tear. I emailed Jo and she sent me some options and the. posted me out this beautiful brand new human

hair wig that someone has donated. There was no way I was going to be able to afford to buy another wig

like this. I am so thankful to Jo and everything she does at Preloved Reloved. This wig ended up being

my absolute fave and I’m even wearing now while I type! I was also able to donate all my headscarves

and others useful things I used during cancer, and I love that they can go to someone else who needs

them. You are making such a huge different to our community Jo and helping so many people! Cancer

becomes very expensive situation!” – Zoe, London

“I got a port before starting chemo so needed to have access for chemo infusions and blood tests etc. I

found Jo at Preloved Reloved on Instagram and asked her for a T-shirt with buttons so the nurses could

access my port easily. Her reply was so lovely asking what colour I would prefer. It only took a few days

until I received my package with not only one but two tshirts! Also included was a gorgeous scarf from

Scamp and Dude, a lovely hand crocheted key ring and a thoughtful handwritten note. So many people,

including nurses and other patients, have asked about my tshirts and I always tell them about Jo. If

there’s anything you need, just ask Jo if she has it. She has wigs, head coverings and lots more. I’m so

glad I found prelovedreloved on Instagram. Thank you so much!” Mairi, Edinburgh

“This is such an amazing service for anyone going through treatment or like me after breast cancer

treatment. Breast forms are SO expensive so to find a really good, brand new one on Jo’s site was

amazing. I contacted Jo and asked if I could try it, she replied quickly and my package arrived 2 days

later. It fitted perfectly. This is such a fabulous idea as not only does i save you money it saves items like

this going to waste. Thank you Jo for your kindness and all the time and effort you devote to this service.”

– Lynn, Whistable Kent

“Following breast cancer treatment and surgery, I found it more and more difficult to find a bra that would

fit comfortably. As I didn’t have a wage coming in, I ‘made do’ with ill fitting bras. I saw Preloved Reloved

on Instagram and made a request to the lovely Jo, founder of this wonderful charity, for bras that looked

suitable. Jo sent these bras out to me expeditiously, OMG, the fit was perfect! So happy. Thanks Jo,

and Preloved Reloved. A wonderful charity giving women of low means access to everything to help us

through during treatment/post treatment.” – Krys, Oxford

Can you tell us about your team?

Preloved Reloved is run by me as founder and lead trustee, alongside two fellow trustees, and supported by a couple of local volunteers.

What are the values of your organisation and can you describe your organisation in three words?

If I had to sum up Preloved Reloved- Cancer & Beyond, it would be: Community, Dignity, No one facing cancer alone. Everything we do comes back to those three things, making sure people feel part of a community, treated with dignity, and never left to cope with the practical and emotional weight of a cancer diagnosis by themselves.

How are you funded, and what can people do to support you if they would like to?

We’re a registered charity (a Charitable Incorporated Organisation), which means we rely entirely on donations, fundraising and grants to keep going. There are a few ways people can support us:

  • Donate items – wigs, turbans, headscarves, mastectomy pillows, PICC line covers, adaptive clothing, anything that can be recycled and passed onto other going through a cancer diagnosis, items must be in excellent condition, gently-used or new condition
  • Donate funds – to help cover the practical costs of running the charity, like our storage unit and day-to-day operations
  • Fundraising – are you holding an event, running a marathon or taking on a challenge – why not do it for Preloved Reloved?
  • Follow and share – helping us reach the people who need us most is often just as valuable as a donation itself
