Dementia-Friendly Cancer Advocacy Service

In today’s blog, we hear from Citizens Advice Rotherham & District’s Cancer Advocacy team about how they support people living with cancer and dementia, whilst working to improve services and reduce inequalities.

People living with both cancer and dementia often face additional challenges throughout their cancer journey. Understanding complex information, attending appointments, making treatment decisions and navigating different services can become increasingly difficult, while family members and carers are often balancing multiple caring responsibilities.

The Dementia-Friendly Cancer Advocacy Service, delivered by Citizens Advice Rotherham & District and funded by Macmillan Cancer Support, provides specialist, person-centred support for people affected by both cancer and dementia, as well as their families and carers.

Our advocates work alongside clients, carers and healthcare professionals to help people understand their options, access the right support and feel more confident throughout their cancer journey.

Support includes:

  • One-to-one advocacy for people living with cancer and dementia, including support before, during and after hospital appointments.
  • Practical advice and support, including help to access benefits, grants, financial assistance and wider Citizens Advice services.
  • Support for carers and families through individual support, information and guidance.
  • A Carers’ Wellbeing Group, providing a welcoming space for carers to connect with others, share experiences, access information and take time to focus on their own wellbeing.
  • Working alongside NHS teams, Macmillan services and community organisations to improve communication and ensure care is coordinated around the individual.
  • Developing dementia-friendly cancer care by capturing learning from the project to improve services, reduce inequalities and influence future cancer pathways.

Every person’s experience of cancer and dementia is unique. Our service offers flexible, tailored support that focuses on what matters most to each individual and those around them.

If you, or someone you care for, is living with cancer and dementia, we’re here to help. Call our Cancer Advocacy Team on 01709 515 680 (Option 3), text ‘Advocacy’ to 07860 047512, or contact Citizens Advice Rotherham & District to find out more about the support available.
