5 minutes with… The Field Doctor

In today’s blog, we chat to Field Doctor co-founder Alex about bringing nutritious food to the doorstep of those that need support to cook and eat well in trying times.

Tell us about your organisation?

Field Doctor was founded in 2020 with a simple belief: food is medicine. Our co-founders came together with a shared frustration that people managing health conditions were being left to navigate nutrition alone, often at the hardest moments of their lives. We wanted to change that by making genuinely nutritious, dietitian-designed food effortless to access. All our meals are cooked from scratch by our chefs in our Somerset kitchen using wholefood ingredients, no ultra-processed nasties, then frozen to lock in nutrition and delivered direct to the door, ready to heat and eat.

What services do you offer people living with or affected by cancer?

We offer dietitian-designed, chef-made meals delivered frozen to your door, created specifically to support people with a health condition or dietary need. For people living with or recovering from cancer, that means meals that are nutrient-dense, a source in protein, rich in fibre and plant diversity, and suitable for smaller appetites, because we know treatment can affect taste, appetite and energy for cooking. Our menu of 120+ meals means we can cater for a wide range of needs alongside cancer, including allergies, IBS (we make the UK’s only certified low FODMAP range) and other dietary requirements. Our Eat Well, Live Well Programme was developed with cancer specialists Perci Health and has helped reduce participants’ BMI, menopausal symptoms and improve eating habits.

Who are your services aimed at supporting?

Adults of all ages and life stages, anyone living with or recovering from cancer, as well as the family members and carers supporting them (who often need one less thing to worry about at mealtimes). Many of our customers are older adults, people managing multiple conditions at once, or people who simply don’t have the energy to shop and cook well during treatment.

How do you cater for people with specific needs?

Because we deliver nationwide direct to the door, there’s no need to travel anywhere, meals arrive frozen in insulated packaging and simply need heating, which makes them ideal for people with mobility issues, fatigue or limited kitchen confidence. Every meal is personalisable: customers complete a short health quiz and receive a plan tailored to their conditions, allergies and goals. We offer meals free from all 14 major allergens, gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options, and portions designed for smaller appetites. Our customer care team are on hand by phone and email for anyone who’d rather talk their order through than use a website.

What’s the most rewarding thing about the work you do?

Hearing from customers that our meals have given them their appetite, energy or independence back. When someone going through treatment tells us we’ve taken the stress out of eating well, or a carer tells us they can finally stop worrying whether their loved one is getting proper nutrition, that’s exactly why we started Field Doctor. For several of us, the mission is personal, and those messages mean everything.

What would you say to those who are considering getting in touch but are nervous or apprehensive?

There’s no commitment, no pressure and no judgement. You can order a single box to try, with no subscription required, and our friendly team will happily talk you through the menu and help find meals that suit your needs and tastes. And if something isn’t right, just tell us — we’re a small team and we genuinely care about getting it right for you.

Do you have testimonials from people that have used your services?

Yes, we’re rated Excellent on Trustpilot, with customers describing our meals as “game-changing” and telling us we’ve “changed my life”. We’re also trusted by healthcare professionals: we’re an approved NHS supplier for special dietary meals, and more than 200 healthcare professionals recommend us to their patients.

Helen Lay described the Eat Well, Live Well Programme: “This programme allowed me to have a much-needed break from food preparation at a time when I was recovering from my chemotherapy and radiotherapy. I have always eaten healthily, so it was great to know this is proper food. I have since placed more orders for those busy days, and have also adapted my own recipes to reflect the delicious food I got to try.

Can you tell us about your team?

We’re a small, close-knit team based in Somerset. Field Doctor was co-founded by Martin and Alex, who bring decades of experience building trusted food brands. Our meals are designed by our registered dietitian Laura, working with the latest evidence-based research and leading clinical experts, and brought to life by our Michelin-trained chef Matt and his kitchen team, who cook everything from scratch in small batches. Beth, Lauren and Sally look after our customers day to day, many of whom they know by name.

What are the values of your organisation, and can you describe it in 3 words?

We believe in food as medicine: that what you eat should work as hard for your health as any prescription, without compromising on taste. We’re science-led, we never cut corners on ingredients, and we treat every customer as an individual. In three words: nourishing, personal, trusted.

How are you funded, and what can people do to support you?

We’re not a charity, we’re an independent, founder-led business, supported by our customers and a community of investors who share our belief in food as medicine (many joined us through crowdfunding). The best way to support us is simply to try the meals, tell friends or family who might benefit, and leave us a review. Healthcare professionals who’d like to recommend us to patients are always welcome to get in touch, we love working with the clinical community.
