Cancer Support Services in Reading | Spotlight

There are over 6,000 local and national support services listed across the UK on Cancer Care Map. Today we’re spotlighting some of the cancer support services available in and around Reading. 

 

 

Reading Bladder Cancer Support Group Trust

Support group for people living with bladder cancer and their loved ones and carers. Meet others with shared experiences and ask medical guest speakers questions related to bladder cancer. There is also a ‘befriending’ or one-to-one service for people newly diagnosed, and those undergoing treatment.

Reading Prostate Support Group

Free support group for men living with prostate cancer and their loved ones and carers, offering information and support at its monthly group meetings, in person and online on the first Friday of the month from 6.15pm, check before travelling. A variety of support is available, one to one by phone or email together with monthly leisurely walks for members and their partners which often finish at a local pub or café where non-walkers can also join for a chat.

Duchess of Kent Hospice

Hospice for people living with neurological and life-limiting conditions and their loved ones and carers. It offers palliative and end of life care and support including care in people’s homes and the community, pain/symptom management and emotional, practical, spiritual and bereavement support.

HASAG Coffee Morning

Coffee morning providing information and advice for anyone living with an asbestos-related disease including their loved ones. The group is also an opportunity to meet and chat to others with shared experiences, and has a nurse specialist / solicitors in attendance to offer support. Held on the fourth Wednesday of the month, 11am to 1pm. The national service also offers counselling, legal and financial help and benefits advice.

Myeloma UK Support Group 

Support group for people living with myeloma, and their loved ones and carers. It offers information, resources and the chance to meet others with shared experiences. Meetings are mainly online, via Zoom, and a mixture of semi formal technical meetings and informal sessions. They also have a WhatsApp group and meet monthly for social coffee mornings.

My Cancer Choices

Cancer support service offering complementary therapy for people currently undergoing cancer treatment, or within 6 months of treatment. This includes acupuncture, massage, reflexology, mindfulness, yoga, reiki, art therapy, scar tissue massage, Tai Chi and Pilates. Six free one to one treatments are available. Donations are welcomed for courses and individual therapies.

Thrive – Therapeutic Gardening 

Charity which helps improve people’s physical and mental health through gardening and horticulture. It runs various groups including one for those living with a life changing condition such as cancer, and general sessions for adults with disabilities.
