Guest Blog | Diane Gasking, Oncology Massage and Lymphatic Drainage

From sports injuries as a student to specialist training in oncology massage, Diane’s journey into massage therapy has been shaped by personal experience and a passion for helping others feel better in their bodies.

Based in Strichen, north-east Aberdeenshire, Diane offers oncology massage and manual lymphatic drainage (along with other types of massage), in a home studio, with home visits available too. Her practice is rooted in care, accessibility, and a belief in the benefits of massage for everyone, whether it’s easing aches and pains, supporting recovery, or simply promoting relaxation.

In this blog, Diane shares her story, her approach, and what clients can expect when they come for treatment.

“During my time as a university student studying Applied Sport and Exercise Science, I was actively involved in a wide range of sports. This combination of intensive physical training and a naturally clumsy disposition led to a series of injuries that required regular physiotherapy and sports massage. It was through these experiences that I developed a deep appreciation for the relief and recovery benefits that massage therapy can provide — particularly in terms of reducing stiffness and soreness, promoting relaxation, preventing injuries, managing pain, and restoring range of motion.

These personal insights were the catalyst for my decision to pursue a career in massage therapy. In 2016, I officially established my own practice as a sports massage therapist. Since then, I have continued to build upon my professional knowledge through ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD), expanding my expertise in areas such as various stretching techniques and manual lymphatic drainage.

Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working with clients from diverse backgrounds. Some of these individuals have been diagnosed with cancer, which inspired me to undertake specialist training in oncology massage. I firmly believe this group can benefit enormously from the therapeutic effects of massage, particularly in supporting overall wellness during and after treatment.

My practice is currently based in a home studio located in the village of Strichen, in north-east Aberdeenshire. The studio is designed to be accessible, with a disabled entrance for clients with mobility challenges. I also offer home visit appointments within approximately a 12-mile radius of Strichen. Appointments are available during both daytime and evening hours to accommodate different schedules.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is seeing the tangible relief clients experience after treatment — whether it’s easing persistent aches and pains or supporting recovery from injury. I also value the relationships I build with my regular clients; it’s a pleasure to get to know each individual and support their wellness journeys.

Here’s a testimonial from two of my clients who have a regular appointment with me: “Diane has been providing massage therapy to us at our home and from her studio for approximately 2 years. She has a gift for locating the root cause of discomfort & soreness. Her lymphatic drainage is highly recommended & relaxing”.

For clients who may feel nervous or unsure about massage therapy, I offer shorter, introductory sessions to provide a gentle introduction to treatment. If you’re uncomfortable with removing clothing, please know that many massage and stretching techniques can be effectively performed through clothing, and I’m always happy to adapt to individual comfort levels.

In regard to oncology massage, sessions are typically shorter than standard treatments and are tailored specifically to each client’s needs. If you are currently undergoing medical treatment, written permission from your healthcare provider will be required to ensure that massage therapy is appropriate and safe for you at this time.”
