Tell us about your organisation…
Cancer in Common is a UK charity dedicated to bringing people affected by cancer together through social events. Founded by Chloe Dixon (@chloedixon.London) following her own diagnosis with Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia in 2018, the organisation grew from a desire to tackle the loneliness and isolation many people experience after a cancer diagnosis.
What services do you offer people living with or affected by cancer?
What started as one small event soon developed into a growing community. Tickets sold out within hours, highlighting the demand for supportive social spaces within the cancer community. Today, Cancer in Common hosts events across the UK, creating welcoming environments where people living with or beyond cancer can connect with others who genuinely understand their experiences.
Who are your services aimed at supporting?
Rather than focusing on clinical support, Cancer in Common is all about emotional wellbeing, friendship and community. The charity offers free social events where people can relax, have fun and connect without feeling defined by their diagnosis. Whether it’s a casual meet-up, a cinema evening or a larger community event, the aim is always the same: to help people feel less alone.
How do you cater for people with specific needs?
Cancer in Common is supported by a passionate team of trustees, volunteers and advocates, many of whom have lived experience of cancer themselves. Their shared understanding helps create spaces that feel genuine, compassionate and supportive.
What’s the most rewarding thing about the work you do?
For the team, one of the most rewarding aspects of their work is watching genuine connections and friendships develop between attendees.
What would you say to those who are considering getting in touch with you but are nervous or apprehensive?
Many people arrive feeling uncertain or isolated but leave with a sense of belonging and support from others who share similar experiences.
Do you have testimonials from people that have used your services?
Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with many describing the events as warm, supportive and empowering. One attendee described the atmosphere as “a room full of love, laughter and kindness,” while another said: “If you arrive alone, you’ll leave with new friends.”
And finally, how are you funded and what can people do to support you if they would like to?
As a registered charity, Cancer in Common relies on donations, fundraising and community support to continue providing free events for people affected by cancer. Those wishing to support the charity can donate, volunteer, attend fundraising events or simply help spread awareness of its work.
